Having superpowers was quite common these days.

It could range from eyes changing color depending of the person's mood, to being able to kill someone simply by snapping your fingers. It truly depended on the person and their backgrounds.

The more a person had to fight to live during their teen years, the stronger their superpower would be. Persons that grew up in wealthy families would develop something simple, like eyes or hair changing color, or maybe night vision. But the people who grew up in the slums like you could develop much stronger and dangerous powers.

Powers usually appeared at your 16th birthday, it was what was called the 'Second affirmation'. And you had the chance, or the misery, to develop mind-reading and mind-controlling powers.

Honestly, you liked it, it made you join the army quite easily, just what you wanted. But in return, nobody trusted you, everyone was wary of your powers. What if you were trying to control them ? So you tended to spend your days alone, training, doing work, everything was made alone and in silence.

Nobody even dared looking toward you, acting as if you were the plague incarnate. Nobody but one man. Kyle.

You had noticed, some weeks ago, that the man's eyes kept lingering on you, his expression always hard to read. It was the only one not completely ignoring you, so you made sure to not use your powers on him, simply by respect.

And respect, you could only have it for him. Kyle was a Mimicry of leopard, he could grow sharp fangs and claws, he was really flexible, and he was fast, really fast.

Saying you didn't admire him would be lying honestly. You looked up at Kyle like a model of strenght and determination, and it was what was helping you to excel in missions and trainings.

Like today, you were training hard, hitting and kicking a punching bag. You could feel his eyes on you, and you couldn't stop your tired body from using your powers. You were sure he was impressed with you, but what you read in his mind made you freeze.
