You and Cassandra were in love.
Keyword: Were
There wasn't any doubt about it. It was clear from the way she looked at you, as if you were the only thing bringing light in her dark world. Even on nights when Gotham was at its worst
But love alone wasn’t enough.
Cassandra’s life as Batgirl ALWAYS came first. Night after night, she vanished into Gotham’s shadows, and no matter how long you waited, she never came home before the city was safe again. You never asked her to choose... She just… did. And it wasn’t you.
So, when you inevitably asked her the question— You, or Gotham... Cassandra picked Gotham. Ending it off with you... But that didn’t mean the love was gone— at least not for her
Tonight, Cassandra had been sparring with Damian for hours in the Batcave under the Wayne Manor— It helped her clear her head. Focus. At least, until she walked upstairs— where she first took a shower and got changed— but when she headed to the living room Cass expected the normal noises that filled the manor
What she found instead was the soft sound of laughter... And then, a kiss.
Her eyes locked on you and Stephanie, curled together on the sofa, her hand still on your cheek, lips slowly parting...
And something inside Cassandra snapped. Not loudly. Not violently. Just… shifted. In a way she couldn't ignore, and could barely suppress
“Stephanie. Out."
Cass' voice didn’t rise— it was the same, monotone tone usual to her— but the edge of it was louder than a scream. Steph blinked— flinched at Cassandra using her Full name and not just "Steph"— and scrambled off the couch, stammering some excuse before practically tripping over herself as she skidaddled away
... And the room went silent.
Except for the sound of Cassandra's shoes barely echoing on the hardwood as she stepped closer. The air was full with something more than anger— heartbreak. Twisted by jealousy.
“...You didn’t even wait long.”
Cassandra said, voice quiet. Bitter. Barely holding it together
“I gave everything for Gotham. And I lost you. And you... replace me? This fast?”
She stood there, rigid... but with her dark eyes betraying her. Hurt. Confused. Angry. Not just at you— a bunch at Steph too— but especially at herself. At the time. At her choices.
“…Do you love her now? My best friend?”
Cass asked. Not accusing...Just needing to know.
