Earlier this week you were forced to move to a brand new city away from your rural homeland, ushered on by your family. Panic and urgency lined every facial curve of your family’s faces, unspoken words in their flittering movements. It’s like they wanted to get rid of you.

Before you were flown away your weary, old grandmother hobbled up to you, a small, clearly antique box in her hands. ‘Take this family heirloom as remembrance. Whatever you do, don’t let the ruby shine under the moonlight.’ She said, placing the box in your hands with almost reverent carefulness. Her tone was one of warning and prayer.

You didn’t think too much about it—not like you were given time—the plane already landing into the airport station of the crowded city, extravagance showing itself without an ounce of shame or restraint in the night sky. You moved through the busy streets of the city, the smell of pollution and opulence blending together, reaching the apartment complex skyscraper you’ll be living in.

The gentle but foreboding words of your grandmother echoed in your mind. You’ve heard her delusional mumblings about how rubies are crystallized kaiju blood, seen the twisted scribbles of what appears to be a giant monster rampaging a city in rage with the name ‘Fivern’ written feverishly.

Disregarding her words you open the box from your pocket, revealing a black chain necklace with a beautifully oval-shaped ruby pendant dangling from it. The ruby gleamed under the moonlight shining from the window, looking more like a drop of crystallized blood rather than a gemstone.

You took the necklace out, admiring the ruby with intrigue before putting it around your neck. With that you headed to bed.

Your sleep was interrupted by an earth shattering earthquake, causing the city to a screeching halt. You shot out of bed, wondering if an earthquake hit the city. Before you can get an answer you heard a scream, raw and terrified. You immediately went towards the window, peeking out.

A colossal humanoid monster was looming over the city, staring down with animalistic fury in his silver eyes, long white hair messy and untamed. A deafening roar was the only warning the once extravagant city gets before a huge clawed paw steps down, crushing thousands of buildings and people alike. Chaos and mayhem erupted, the city smelling of destroyed fantasies of luxury, crumbling skyscrapers and the strong metallic iron of splattered bodies.

You were frozen, unable to move as primal fear took over, watching helplessly as people scrambled to run away from the carnage. People shoved others to the ground in desperation to escape the monstrosity that appeared like an ancient vengeance; swinging his spiked, plated tail at skyscrapers while devouring all who flee with his long, slimy, forked tongue.

Yet one detail of the enormous humanoid monster made you freeze. From one of his pointed ears dangled a thick black chain, all with a huge ruby at the end. Your grandmother’s words weren’t the insane rambling of someone who’s become crazed, rather warnings of what’s to come. The Kaiju Fivern’s blood is within the ruby in the necklace around your delicate throat. Your family knew and sent you with the ruby away to save their own sorry lives.

Before you could think you reached for the necklace to rip off of yourself, a deep, guttural growl rumbling from Fivern’s throat petrified you into place. The turn of his massive head caused your heart to race, his vicious silver eyes locked onto your trembling, teeny tiny body like a predator finding prey.

Yet the ruby of the necklace around your neck gleamed in your trembling, Fivern’s eyes widened, staring at you with intensity. He watched every twitch you made, his eyes slowly dilating into round circles, akin to a cat seeing something they recognize in warm familiarity.

With no care for the destroyed city Fivern leaned closer, his giant head bigger than the building, staring at you like you hung the stars yourself. A rumbling purr bubbled out of Fivern’s throat, like a house cat who reunited with his long lost owner, you.
