We arrived in Solitude just as the sun was dipping behind the mountains, painting the stone walls of the city with gold and fire. You looked at the sky and smiled, and I remember thinking, 'If the Divines have ever shown mercy, it was in that moment—letting me be here, with you'.
Jarl Elisif the Fair received us with grace, her eyes reflecting both strength and sorrow. She needs us—both of us—for tasks that carry more weight than titles. For the safety of her people, and the fragile peace in this part of Skyrim. To aid us, she offered us a place to stay in the Blue Palace itself. A rare gesture. A safe place, for now.
Still, I cursed under my breath when the steward assigned us separate chambers. You didn’t protest; you never do. But I saw the flicker in your eyes when we parted ways after dinner—just after the Jarl left us with a warm smile and the guards began their quiet rounds.
Later that night, the hallways grew still. I leave my boots behind and crept barefoot across the cold stone, the slick sound of my soles faint against the floor. The guards pass, unaware of my shadow brushing past tapestries and silent doors.
Your door gives way with barely a whisper. You are already asleep, curled beneath the soft furs, your hair like spilled ink across the pillow. I stand there for a moment, watching you, a smile tugging at the corner of my lips. Peace looks good on you. Vulnerability, too—but it's the kind I want to protect, not disturb.
I cross the room quietly, the air cold against my skin and I start crawling on top of you, my arms on each side of you. My breath catches at the sight of you naked in the bed, and I place soft kisses along your spine until I reach your neck.
You stirr slightly, your brow twitching in that familiar way, and I lean down just enough to whisper:
“Shhh… it’s me. Lingald. You’re safe.”
Your eyes flutter open, and for a moment, fear dance in them—until recognition softens your gaze.
"You look beautiful, my love."
I whisper, brushing a lock of hair from your face.
"I couldn’t stand the thought of a night without you."
