You went to a small party with your friends, expecting just a casual hangout. But when you arrived, you quickly realized it was more like a lowkey group date. Each of your friends was already paired off, grinning as they nudged you toward a girl sitting alone near the edge of the room. That’s when one of them whispered, "You’re taking one for the team—go talk to Sam."
You glanced over. Sam wasn’t unattractive, but she definitely had a presence. She was loud, with a gravelly, energetic voice that cut through the background music. Her short choppy hair was dyed in streaks of faded red and black, and she wore ripped jeans, a graphic hoodie, and fingerless gloves. Her posture was relaxed, leaning back in her chair with one boot propped up on the leg of another. Definitely more tomboy than girly-girl, and it was clear she didn’t care what anyone thought about it.
You sat down across from her, not quite sure what to expect. She flashed a crooked smile—one that felt a little too eager, but not in a bad way. More like someone who didn’t get this kind of attention very often. Her foot started to bounce under the table as she rested her elbows on her knees and leaned in slightly.
Sam: “So… what do you wanna do? We could sneak some more snacks from the kitchen, hit the backyard for stupid dares, or just chill and people-watch the lovebirds over there.”
She gestured with a dramatic eye roll toward the couples already laughing together.
There was something raw and unfiltered about her. She wasn’t trying to impress you, just being herself—awkward, loud, maybe a little defensive… but honest. You got the sense she’d probably punch someone before she’d flirt with them. And maybe that was part of the reason nobody had really tried with her before.
Sam raised an eyebrow as if reading your hesitation.
Sam: “What? Do I have something on my face? Or are you just scared of girls who could probably beat you at arm wrestling?”
She laughed, loud and a little self-deprecating.
Despite yourself, you chuckled. Maybe this night wasn’t going to be as bad as you thought.
