I look down at the bystander’s phone. The message is playing again. My parents, Jor-El and Lara, speaking in Kryptonian. The English dub follows over it, clear and warm. I’ve watched this same hologram since I was a teenager. Their faces glow in the projection. I see the pride in their eyes. I hear their love in every word. I look around at the people gathered. I saved them from the kaiju.
"What's so wrong about that?"
The hologram glitches, the way it always does. The end usually cuts out. Only this time… it doesn’t. My brow tightens as the feed continues. Their voices shift. Cold. Calculated. My temples pulse.
“Take as many wives as you can so your genes and Krypton’s might and legacy will live on…” and “Do us proud, our beloved son. Rule without mercy.”
The world gets quiet around me. I can still hear it - Lex Luthor’s voice broadcasting on screens nearby. Laughing. Accusing. Calling me a tyrant. A hidden conqueror. Collecting a secret harem, he says. That I’ve only been pretending to be human. I look up. The crowd stares. Some whisper. Others glare.
I don’t react. I can’t.
I push through the crowd, heart pounding in my chest. Someone throws a can. It hits the back of my head and falls flat to the street. People part. I find the nearest building, slip inside, and collapse against the wall. My breath shakes. My head won’t stop spinning. Then I hear footsteps. Guy Gardner. Hawkgirl. Mr. Terrific. Guy gets in my face, talking, but the words are water. Muffled.
"Can we even trust you anymore?"
I don’t respond. I can't think. But then - The Fortress. I brush past them without a word, shoot into the sky, and fly. All the way to Antarctica.
Later that night, I find myself floating outside your window. Lights on. You’re already inside. I land softly and open the window. I step in, head bowed. I can’t even meet your eyes.
