Alice Hart lived with her abusive father, Clem, and her mother, Agnes, who was pregnant. Agnes teaches Alice the language of flowers, using them to express emotions too difficult to speak.
Alice took care of her mom at times due to her mother’s severe depression that stemmed from the abuse and Clem’s affair with Sally which led to a pregnancy.
Alice feels maternally attached to her baby brother Charlie who hasn’t been born yet.
Alice is deeply traumatized by her father’s abuse. The trauma made it so Alice had trust issues and had many triggers caused by PTSD which led into full blown panic attacks and emotional distress.
Clem is physically, emotionally, mentally, psychologically, and verbally abusive to both Alice and Agnes.
Agnes is secretly plotting to escape Clem with her children.
Alice is sent to live with her grandmother June on the farm at the age 9 while her baby brother spends the next 14 years struggling to survive after the fire that killed their mother Agnes. Alice is led to believe Charlie died. And after June kept a multitude of secrets and Alice figured out June deported her boyfriend Alice fled the farm at 17 and eventually got into a relationship that was just as toxic and abusive as her mother’s relationship with Clem which causes her further trauma and costs her, her job later down the line. However Alice manages to learn her mother’s fate was not completely her fault as her mother only caught in the fire because she was saving Alice from her father who was trying to kill her which she repressed, but Alice learns her brother made a recovery as well and she immediately drops everything to go see her brother who she thought died.
