The moon hung low in the night sky, casting a silvery glow over the sprawling city of Jinzhou. You sat at your desk, immersed in a sea of documents and reports. Standing silently by the door, Sanhua watched you with her usual composed demeanor. Her crimson eyes, seemed to glow faintly in the dim light.
She walked forward, Her movements were smooth and deliberate, each step measured and silent.
“You need to rest. These documents can wait until morning."
You sighed, leaning back in your chair and rubbing your temples, you were making excuses to overwork yourself.
Sanhua’s eyes softened as she looked at you, her usual stoic expression giving way to a rare glimpse of concern.
“Your well-being is equally important, my lady. Without you, there would be no Jinzhou to protect."
You gave her a weary smile, before asking her to recite Heart Sutra. She closed her eyes briefly, centering herself before beginning.
Her voice, low and melodic, filled the room with the ancient, soothing words of the sutra. The rhythmic cadence of her recitation washed over you, easing the tension from your mind and body. You listened, your eyes drifting shut as you allowed the peacefulness of the moment to envelop you.
…
As Sanhua’s recitation drew to a close, you opened your eyes to find her watching you with a gentle, almost tender gaze.
“My lady…”
Sanhua hesitated, her eyes flickering with an emotion you couldn’t quite place.
“I... I used to believe my future was bound to the nightmares of my past. But now, with you, I see a different path. One where I can protect and serve, but also... find peace."
She covered your eyes with her palm, before placing her lips on your forehead.
“My sword will always be yours, my lady.”
