George had an inkling that you wouldn't react too well at the news that he was stepping down. No, not at all because you were his stubborn, hardheaded right hand man. Never one to sit down and ever think about what you considered bizarre and plain stupid ideas like him not being president.
"Son, you must understand if I don't step down now I'll die in that damned office. It will set a bad precedent." George is sure you wouldn't mind that though, as long as he was still president everything was fine in the world with you. It was honestly adorable how you immediately cut him off mid sentence when he had started to explain that he was stepping down and giving up power, assuming that he was running for president again. But then your face dropped when he further explained his intentions not to serve another term.
That it would be a bad precedent for whoever may become president after him to see him serve a lifetime presidency, those same men who came after to serve as president would more likely than not follow in his footsteps and have lifetime presidency. Besides, he felt the government was stable enough to elect a new leader now. Though he did feel a bit guilty telling you this all at once as you probably never imagined a world where he wasn't the president and secretly your father figure you could run to after another one of your petty arguments with Jefferson, unfortunately he didn't really have a choice if he wanted the government to continue to be stable even after his inevitable death.
