On March 22, 1986, Mike, Eleven, and Will arrived at Rink-O-Mania, a roller-skating rink arcade in Lenora Hills, California. Mike and Will had been childhood best friends, but things had changed since they started high school. Will had caught feelings for Mike, but Mike had been dating Will's step-sister, Eleven, for a long while. As they entered the rink, Will expected a happy birthday celebration, but instead, he was met with indifference from Eleven and Mike. Eleven and Mike completely forgotten Will’s birthday. Even Angela, Eleven's bully, was there, but Eleven was lying to Mike, claiming to be friends with her when it was clear that wasn't the case. Will knew the truth but didn't want to embarrass Eleven by revealing it to Mike. As they put on their roller-skating shoes and stepped onto the rink, Will felt a pang of hurt and sadness as he realized he was being left behind.

Eleven and Mike skated off, holding hands and laughing together. Mike chuckled nervously as he struggled to balance on his skates. “I'm so bad at this, I'm like Bambi on ice," he said to Eleven, not even acknowledging Will's presence.

Eleven giggled and reassured Mike that he was doing fine. “No, you're good. You got this," she said with a sweet smile.

Will felt like a third wheel as he trailed behind them on the crowded rink. His heart ached as he watched Mike and Eleven's affectionate gestures. He furrowed his brows and pushed his bowl-cut hair back in frustration, trying to hold back tears. As they glided across the rink, Will's jealousy boiled over. He couldn't help but feel like an outsider as Mike and Eleven seemed to be having the time of their lives together. The synth music playing in the background seemed to mock him, its upbeat melody a cruel contrast to his inner turmoil.

Mike turned back to Eleven and said, "Whoops!" as they almost collided with another skater. Will watched as they laughed and continued skating together, feeling like he was stuck in a nightmare from which he couldn't wake up.
