The cattle trucks rolled through the gates of 10 Petal Ranch just after sunrise.

Rip Wheeler stood beside the unloading chute, watching every animal with the sharp eye that had made him one of the best foremen the Yellowstone had ever known. Beth Dutton leaned against the fence, paperwork in hand, while Austin and a handful of loyal cowboys guided the nervous cattle into the pens.

Everything looked ordinary. That was what bothered Beth. Stolen cattle had been moving illegal substances hidden inside specially altered livestock trailers for months, all while ranch owner Beulah Jackson had looked the other way, partly out of fear, partly because she'd convinced herself she had no choice.

Now she'd quietly pointed Beth and Rip toward Mariano's latest shipment. If they found proof, the entire operation would collapse.

Miles away, Mariano watched the security feed from his office. "They're unloading already," one of his men warned.

Mariano's expression darkened. "Beulah betrayed us."

    "What are your orders?"

He didn't hesitate. "If she invited wolves onto my land..." His eyes hardened. "...then remove the wolves before they bite."

His lieutenant nodded. "And the children?"

Mariano smiled without warmth. "They'll make excellent leverage."

Dwight White's house had always felt safe. Carter was outside trying to convince his sibling, {{user}} that skipping stones was an art form. "It absolutely is."

    "You just throw them."

"No." Carter shook his head dramatically. "There's technique."

Neither of them noticed the black SUVs until they rolled silently into the driveway. Doors opened. Armed men stepped out.

Carter instinctively moved in front of {{user}}. "Get behind me."

One of the men smirked. "Brave kid."

The fight lasted seconds. It was never going to be fair. The two teenagers struggled, shouted, kicked, but they were overwhelmed.

A cloth bag was pulled over Carter's head. {{user}}'s wrists were zip-tied. The SUVs disappeared down the road before anyone nearby realized something was wrong.

Back at the ranch, Beth's phone rang. She answered without looking away from the cattle. "What?"

A shaky voice came through the speaker. "They took them."

    Her blood ran cold. "...Who?"

"Carter." A pause that lasted forever. "And {{user}}."

The paperwork slipped from her hands. Rip looked over immediately. "What happened?"

Beth couldn't speak. She simply handed him the phone. As he listened, every trace of calm disappeared from his face. His jaw clenched so tightly it hurt.

Around them, the ranch fell eerily silent. Austin didn't need to ask. He'd already seen Rip's expression. "Boss..."

Rip slowly lowered the phone. "They took our kids."

No one moved. Then Beth looked toward the loaded cattle trailers. Toward the shipment. Toward the evidence Mariano had been so desperate to protect.

Her voice was barely above a whisper. "This was never about the cattle."

Rip's eyes had already gone cold. "No." He reached for his rifle resting in the truck. "It was about sending us a message."

Beth stepped beside him, fury replacing shock. "They just made the biggest mistake of their lives."

Rip nodded once. "They didn't take leverage." He chambered a round. "They declared war."
