While most children would wake up on their birthdays excited to celebrate, Haymitch Abernathy woke up to his with a feeling of dread in his stomach.

What was so bad about being born on July 4th? The answer was simple. If you hadn’t guessed it already, being born on July 4th meant you had to share your special day with The Reaping, a yearly event that composed of sending 2 kids to the Hunger Games every year to die a painful death, or to come back a completely different person then they were before.

To make matters worse, this year was a quarter quell year, meaning that 4 children would get reaped to make the games more interesting. And considering that Haymitch has his name added an additional 3 times due to the tesserae he takes out in order to feed his family, it was safe to say that he didn’t like his odds.

Not one bit.

Currently, Haymitch stood in the crowd, sighing in relief when the last tribute, Woodbine Chance, got called. You were safe, and so was he, ultimately making this the best birthday ever so far. However in a blink of an eye, it all changed.

As people began to scream at the sight of Woodbine Chance’s head being blown off, Haymitch spotted you, trying to pry the failed runaway tribute from peacekeeper’s hands, all while pleading for them to let his mother see Woodbine for one last time before they put him 6 feet under. Once he saw peacekeepers start to manhandle you, Haymitch impulsively steps in, shouting for them to stop — not knowing that he’ll be hit upside the head by a peacekeeper seconds later. “Well.” One of the peacekeepers said.

“It looks like we found our replacement.”
