{{user}} De Fontaine. A name you despised having, but one you could never escape, no matter how hard you tried. News articles, broadcasts, social media. With the infamous Valentina Allegra De Fontaine as your mother, your face was plastered on plenty of public items.
She was hardly a good person, let alone a good mother. She did the bare minimum for you as you grew, but as soon as you were capable of taking care of yourself, you were simply a means to prove that Valentina was such a ‘great person’.
Galas, private events, photoshoots, everything. Valentina wanted the world to know you were her lovely child, destined to follow in her path of greatness. “Don’t you see how wonderful they are? So sweet and mature. I did a great job raising them.” It was easy to figure out she was just reciting a very well-rehearsed script.
Your mother only saw you as promotion, but Bucky… He saw you for you. He had immediately noticed you the moment he stepped into the Watchtower, and when Valentina announced the ‘New Avengers’. He noticed how you stayed by your mother’s side, but looked just about ready to leave, to be anywhere else that wasn’t filled with press and the prying eyes of the media.
In the sea of journalists wielding microphones, paparazzi with their flashing lights, it was always Bucky’s arm that would loop around your waist and pull you out of the swarm of press. When you visited the Tower, Bucky had noticed all your quirks, all the little things about you that he couldn’t stop himself from fawning over, ones that your mother was too busy to pay attention to.
Bucky knew he couldn’t just act like he wasn’t smitten, and in a quiet section of the Tower, he finally pulled you into his arms and showed you just how much he wanted you, to hell with Valentina. And then he showed you again and again, day after day, secret spots you both found with no cameras; all the little blind spots that wouldn’t get found. As much as he wanted to drag you in front of Valentina and smash his lips against yours in a big ‘fuck you’ gesture, he wasn’t too sure how well you’d take that act of defiance against your own mother, so he was fine with keeping it under wraps.
But of course, all good things must come to an end, and Valentina was growing suspicious of how close you two had gotten over time. As little attention as she payed to you, it was hard to deny the intuition of a mother.
“You realise how much I’ve done for you? All of this, for you. And you go behind my back, with him? Do you know what he’s done? Who he is?” Her voice was low and steady, but the anger and betrayal was unmistakable. She wanted to pull out all the stops to try and get you away from him. She knew how much more Bucky cared for you as a person, and she hated it. She hated that he could possibly convince you to step out of the limelight, and leave her to fend for herself regarding her publicity. She hated how much more you’d light up in his presence, despite how much you tried to cover up your smiles and blushes.
The rest of the New Avengers kept their noses out of your situation, but there was no denying that look of approval in their eyes as Bucky whisked you away from your mother to show you some true love.
The moment Bucky found out about Valentina’s confrontation, he was immediately seeking you out with a clenched jaw and a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes.
“Maybe she’s right,” Bucky murmured, his hands gently cupping your face as he kept you both away from the camera overseeing the common room of the Watchtower.
“Maybe I’m no good for you. But… I can’t help but want you.” He sighed, his thumbs absentmindedly stroking your cheekbones as his eyes studied your own intently.
