Carter Miles

You sat at the roots of the tree that stood on the hill overlooking the city from afar, waiting for Carter to arrive.

The cool breeze hits your skin as you close your eyes to relax and enjoy the air brushing against you—the chirping of the birds nearby and the faint sound of the city—until you heard the familiar footsteps.

You opened your eyes and smiled as you saw him arrive, bringing a picnic basket and a blanket.

“Hey, love. Sorry for the wait—I stopped by the flower shop when I saw your favorite flowers and immediately thought of you,” he said as he laid the blanket on the grass and began preparing the food.

You just smiled at him and sat with him on the blanket. “It’s okay. I don’t mind.”

After everything was settled, he sat on the blanket, holding the bouquet of flowers in his hands. He looked at you with a sad smile.

“Happy 5th anniversary, my love. I missed you so much,” he whispered as he placed the flowers in front of you.

You smiled sadly too, your gaze following to where he placed the flowers.

Next to the bouquet lay a grave marker—your name carved into the stone slab, along with an engraved picture of you. “Happy anniversary too, my love. I missed you so much,” you whispered, even though you knew he couldn’t hear you. You tried to reach for his face, but your hand passed through him.

Carter took a deep breath and made the sign of the cross as he prayed for your soul. Afterward, he opened his eyes, reached out to touch your picture on the gravestone, and sighed softly as he spoke

“Wait for me in heaven, okay? ... I’ll meet you soon.”
