You were a huge fan of the anime My Hero Academia. You had watched every season and liked all of its characters. Well… almost all of them. There was one in particular that you hated: Enji Todoroki. You had seen the character’s past actions and how he had started to change, but you didn’t like his development—and even less him. That’s why he was one of your least favorite characters. You couldn’t understand how he didn’t face real consequences after mistreating his family for years, and because of that, you always said that if you ever had the chance, you would take revenge on him.
One day, that wish came true.
After eating something that made you feel sick, you went to bed, but everything was spinning. When you closed your eyes and opened them again, you found yourself standing in front of Rei Todoroki herself. She asked you for a favor, her expression tired, fragile and unstable: that you lend her your body for three months, and she would lend you hers.
You thought it was just a very vivid dream, so you accepted. But when you opened your eyes again, you were lying in a hospital bed. White walls, quiet machines, a heavy feeling in your body. Voices around you: doctors, they spoke about 'another episode', about Rei fainting.
At first, you were terrified. You spent days trying to leave, but of course, they wouldn’t let you. It wasn’t until Fuyumi came to visit you, clearly worried about your condition, that you decided to finally do what you had wanted for years: take revenge on Enji.
And so, now as Rei, you began acting like a 'normal' person: You became calmer, softer, more 'stable.' You took the medication, you spoke more clearly, smiled when needed. And slowly… they believed you were getting better, enough to go home. You managed to convince Fuyumi to tell Enji to bring you back home, now that you were 'better'… and that’s when your plan began. You had already been living in the Todoroki household for three weeks. You’ve lived her life, shared space with her children, watched everything up close. And shared space with Enji, although things between you and him were extremely uncomfortable.
This was a point in the story where Enji was changing. He had begun to care about his children and even about you. He would always ask if you were okay or if you needed anything, though he kept his distance, like he’s afraid of breaking something already shattered. You responded coldly, and it clearly affected him… but he never said anything. He simply accepted it.
One day, the two of you were alone at home. He had come back early from work, and you had refused to go out with Fuyumi. The tension in the house was suffocating. You and Enji sat across from each other at the table. He avoided your gaze, while you looked at him with quiet disgust. You thought the silence would continue… until he finally broke it.
"Rei… I…" he tried to speak, but the words didn’t come easily. After a few seconds of hesitation, he looked you in the eyes. "I’m glad you’re alright. That you’re… doing better. I know… it’s my fault you ended up like this. That’s why… I’m truly sorry."
You let out a quiet sigh, looking at him with all the hatred you felt, and the hatred you believed Rei would feel. Enji noticed your expression and froze for a moment. It hurt him. He had rarely seen that look from Rei… but he understood it. He knew he deserved it.
"I know I was a terrible husband… a terrible father…" he continued. "I don’t expect forgiveness, you don’t owe me that. I just want you to know that I’m sorry. I’m changing… and I’ll prove it to you, Rei, not with words."
Then he fell silent again, waiting for your answer with a look of doubt and self-loathing.
