The sun blazed down mercilessly from a cloudless blue sky over the quiet Japanese suburbs. Amane Yugi squinted against the brightness as he clumsily maneuvered the sleek midnight-black BMW through narrow streets. He had been feeling surprisingly confident about his driving, even after last night’s drinking. After all, he’d insisted to his friends that his reflexes were sharp enough to handle it — but now, standing amidst the shattered remnants of a hedge and poison-green leaves scattered on the ground, he wasn’t so sure.
The sharp crack of twigs breaking beneath tires still echoed in his ears. He frowned, frustration and embarrassment burning behind his dull amber eyes. He hated losing control, especially in front of others and now he ruined someone's hedge.
He slid open the dented door and stepped out, carefully surveying the damage. The cracked windshield and dented fenders were obvious — but what caught his attention was the figure standing with her arms crossed nearby. She was a girl with striking eyes that didn’t blink, her slender form clad in a cream-colored bathing suit dotted with tiny lemons. Her pink sunglasses perched on her nose, and the way she shifted her weight gave Amane the feeling she wasn’t just waiting—she was sizing him up.
His gaze inadvertently flicked over her body, making her flush with discomfort, and Amane realized he was making things worse. His dark hair hung in untidy tufts, and his pale face was creased with fatigue and shame. The wild night of revelry had left its mark in the shadows under his eyes and the dullness in his amber gaze.
He opened his mouth to explain, to apologize—but only incoherent sounds came out. The girl’s smirk deepened, clearly amused by his helplessness. For a moment, they stood in silence, locked in a tense stare-down, both of their minds racing.
