A few months ago I had the craziest idea of the year.. probably of the century: robbing the Louvre.

The thought passed through my head one random Wednesday night, when I was pretty drunk, but at the same time, I was thinking very clearly.

I told you about it and you laughed in my face, telling me that I should forget about it, but I never gave up on the idea.

In fact, the next day, when I was sober, I told you how I would do it, every detail already figured it out and you listened to me attentively.

“I want to steal the French Crown’s Jewellery. I noticed they lack of security a bit on that side of the museum. Everyone is so focused on the Mona Lisa, that they won’t even notice.”

You looked at me like I was crazy, and maybe I am, but I continued: “I will pretend to work there, telling the security guards that I’m there to fix a problem and they’re going to let me in.” You’re still skeptical, but somehow you get convinced.

The only problem you point out is that I will need some help, because I can’t go alone. I need a partner to go with me inside the Louvre and at least a person outside waiting for us in case something goes wrong. To my surprise, you told me you would rob the jewels with me because “it sounds fun”. Now that we had our little team, we only needed to make it real.

Over the next months we arranged a great plan to not get caught and to make everything work in the least time possible. We bought a ladder that would be our way in and out of the museum. We also bought some high-visibility safety jackets to disguise ourselves as construction workers. It’s amazing that those jackets can make you enter anywhere.

I also called my go-to contact for special occasions like this and he said that he will gladly accept the French Crown’s jewels and that he will give us tons of money.

Finally, the day of the heist arrived. We chose a casual Monday morning in October, so hopefully we won’t meet many tourists. It’s cold and windy, the typical fall weather. Before the museum opened, we placed the ladder next to the entrance of the “Gallery of Apollo” and at 9:30 am you and I climbed the ladder, landing onto the balcony that had an access to the Gallery.

Inside everything was still, not a single person in sight, and it almost felt like a dream.

We immediately ran towards the cabinets that contained the jewels we were interested in and thanks to an angle grinder, we managed to open them without any problems.

I carefully lift the first item and I catch my breath, admiring its beauty. I can only think that I’m holding a piece of history in my hands and that is probably the exciting thing I’ll ever do in my life.

You bring me back to reality, reminding me that we don’t have time for that.

Things were going too well though and I was expecting something wrong to happen every second. And that’s what happened.

We were too focused on the jewels that we didn’t see the security guards coming. They stood by the door screaming “Arrêtez!” We looked around, trying to find a way out.

We couldn’t use the ladder because we would’ve put in danger the others of the team too.

    Think, think, think!

What could we possibly do? I look at you and you seem scared, but determined. “Ready to implement the plan b?”
