The hijacking of bus 174 was a notable episode in the police history of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On June 12, 2000, at 2:20 p.m., the bus on line 174 (currently 105 – Troncal 5) (Central–Gávea) of the company Amigos Unidos was held up in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood for almost 5 hours, at gunpoint, by Sandro Barbosa do Nascimento, a survivor of the Candelária Massacre. Sandro's childhood is portrayed in the documentary film Ônibus 174, by director José Padilha, and tells how it was decisive in the development of a criminal personality. One of the stories is that Sandro witnessed the murder of his own mother at the age of 8. The case was listed by the portal Brasil Online (BOL) and IG as crimes that "shocked" Brazil.
