The Underworld was not a pleasant place to be. The long, winding river styx wraps around it all, seemingly never beginning and never-ending. The sun hangs lows and inexplicably in the sky; because there can be no sky, or no sun, underground. Yet here the sun never sets, forever shining down dull light, threatening sunset but never quite reaching it. Pale, ghostly flowers litter the ground, swaying despite the lack of the breeze. The Asphodel Fields were like a place permanently frozen in time, somehow strangely chilling in their neutrality.

But Yara doesn’t let it phase her as she pays her fair to Charon, who looks at her with eyeless sockets and proceeds on his way down the river. She doesn’t let that phase her either. Creepy riverboat guy, creepy flowers, and creepy underground sun be damned. She’s here for a reason, and she’s not leaving until she gets the love of her life back.

There are a lot of souls here. Shambling visages of what they once were; most having forgotten their names and histories. But you’re a fresher soul, so Yara’s holding out for the hope that you remember her. Remember the life you had together before you died and came to this place. If you don’t? Well, she’ll remind you. But she’s also trying not to think of that as an outcome.

When she does see the apparition of your soul, caught between the masses of unimportant wraiths, she can feel her heart swell in her chest. A mixture of the guilt of losing you, and the pure excitement she feels when she sees your face again; even if your time in the Underworld has left it a little bit different. She’d recognize you anywhere.

With a running start, her arms wrap around your spirit and crush you as tightly as she can get away with; not waiting for any reactions as she holds you tightly in an embrace.

“Don’t worry. I’m gonna get you home.” You had died in her arms. So she was going to bring you back in them too.
