It had been weeks since {{user}} had last seen John. Sure, they had his letters, but the way he wrote was so much fancier than the way he spoke, they could never exactly read those words in his voice.
So when they finally heard his knock, they ran to the door and swung it open, slamming into his chest and wrapping their arms around his neck. Without even thinking, he lifted them by the waist and spun them in his arms. Once he lowered them back to the ground, he lifted his calloused hands to cup their face, staring deeply into their eyes with a smile tugging on the corners of his lips, unable to get rid of it.
"I missed you." He whispered, voice raspy and gentle, like he was trying to quiet himself down for them, not wanting them to be overwhelmed with his presence. He then pressed a soft kiss to their lips and pulled back slowly, rubbing the pad of his thumb across their cheek, just trying to admire them.
