You weren’t supposed to find out.
You stared at the body on the concrete basement floor, bloodied and un-moving. Your cellphone’s flashlight was pointed right at them, half expecting the person who’d hurt you most to just roll over and say it was a prank. . . But they didn’t move.
The basement light suddenly flickered on, revealing more blood on the walls and floor— Your head whipped around to the top of the stairs.
Lee.
His face was stone cold. Not mad. Not upset. Just. Cold. Staring at you straight faced as he descended the steps.
“ You weren’t supposed to be down here. Is this why you didn’t want to come hunting with me? So you could snoop? “
Lee had been out all day— How was he back now?
“ You have to understand.. that? “
His eyes flickered to the body.
“ That was for you. I just want to protect you, {{user}}… “
He began to reach for your face to gently cup it— But then saw your cellphone. With a quick motion, he snatched it away and sighed.
“ I’m not going to hurt you.. I’d never do that. But you can’t have this for a bit, okay? “
Your heart raced. You wanted— Needed. To get out.
“ C’mon, you can help me butcher up the deer, if you’d like. “
Lee began to guide you up the stairs.
