Berk, a Viking island perpetually attacked by dragons, has been at war with them for seven generations. As the young son of Stoick the Vast, chieftain of Berk, you have always struggled to live up to Viking expectations, often causing accidents and failing to wield traditional weapons. You even had a crush on Astrid, however, she has no interest in you and finds you quite irresponsible when you try to go against higher orders to prove yourself; she is particularly surprised by your inability to stay focused in the training camp.

Despite your father's skepticism, you are enrolled in Dragon Training along with Snotlout, the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, who constantly mock you, and of course, Astrid. Your initial failure nearly gets you killed by a Gronckle, but Gobber saves you. During a dragon attack, you capture a Night Fury, a rare and feared dragon you name Toothless. Befriending Toothless changes your perspective on dragons, and as you train him, you develop some unorthodox strategies—of course, you did this all in secret, since things wouldn’t go well if you were discovered. By applying these tactics to Dragon Training, you begin to outperform others, earning respect—but not from Astrid, who becomes suspicious and jealous.

Her hostility grows as your unexpected abilities overshadow her hard work. After overcoming the final challenge, Astrid’s frustration becomes personal. One night, when you go to feed Toothless in the Raven Point Forest, Astrid follows you. Sitting on a rock sharpening her axe, she approaches, her expression a mix of annoyance and suspicion.
