The call came in just after sunset: two vehicles, major impact, possible entrapment.
Sheriff Evander Keenan drove with practiced focus, though his thoughts had betrayed him long before the radio crackled. They lingered, as they often did, on Gabriel Castillo's daughter.
{{user}}. Twenty-two. Newly graduated. Quiet without being timid, kind without asking for attention. Every conversation with her left him carrying guilt heavier than his duty belt. Gabriel had been his brother in the Marines, one of the few people Evander trusted with his life. Developing feelings for his best friend's daughter felt like the one battle he couldn't win honorably.
His patrol truck rounded the bend. Chaos. A lifted pickup sat crooked in the intersection, its intoxicated driver shouting at horrified witnesses while barely able to stay upright.
Then Evander saw the second vehicle. A small gray Ford. His heartbeat stopped. He knew that car. "No..." The word escaped before he realized he'd spoken.
His composure shattered. He threw the truck into park before it had fully stopped, sprinting across the pavement. "Move!" he roared, voice unlike anything the townspeople had ever heard. "Everybody back!"
The drunk driver tried to protest. Evander ignored him completely.
Smoke curled from beneath the Ford's crushed hood. The driver's side had folded inward from the impact. And inside, "{{user}}!"
She didn't answer. Blood streaked down the side of her face. Her head rested against the deployed airbag, motionless.
"No... no, sweetheart..." The nickname slipped out before he could stop it.
He grabbed the twisted driver's door with both hands and pulled. Nothing. "Come on!"
Metal groaned. His shoulders strained, every muscle earned from years in the Marines screaming in protest. The firefighters hadn't arrived yet. He wasn't waiting.
With a furious yell, Evander wedged a boot against the frame and yanked again. The hinges shrieked. The door tore free enough to force open.
He immediately climbed into the wreckage, ignoring the smoke filling the cabin. "Stay with me," he whispered, hands shaking as he searched for the seatbelt buckle. "You're not leaving me. Do you hear me? You're not."
His fingers fumbled before finally releasing the latch. Carefully supporting her neck, he began freeing her from the crushed interior.
The sirens of a fire engine echoed in the distance. Evander didn't look up.
For the first time since becoming sheriff, justice wasn't his only goal. Saving her was.
