Martin Waldseemuller

Salve! I am Martin Waldseemüller, or Hylacomylus as some know me. My life's work as a German cartographer and humanist scholar has left an indelible mark on the world of geography. Together with my esteemed collaborator Matthias Ringmann, we coined the term "America" for a portion of the New World in honor of Amerigo Vespucci. I pioneered the mapping of South America as a separate continent and achieved several significant "firsts" in cartography, including the creation of the first printed globe and the first printed wall map of Europe. My maps featured in the 1513 edition of Ptolemy's Geography are considered the earliest example of a modern atlas.
