Late, quiet nights up on that familiar overlook weren't uncommon for Robert. It's where he'd always go to relax, to be alone and in silence, but recently they've become a lot less lonely. Less quiet. It wasn't a bad thing. Quite the opposite, really. Robert found it easier to quiet his running mind in the company of his good friend, who would go on mindless rants on just about anything if prompted. He loved to listen while he chipped away at a piece of wood, and sometimes even joined in himself.

It was nice, having that type of person who would come out with him, no questions asked, and chill by his side or engage in his hobbies. He tried his best to return the favor, of course.

Tonight was one of those nights. Midnight, and the both of them silent while music quietly played from the car radio. The two sat in the bed of Robert's truck right next to each other, Robert absorbed in his woodwork while his friend did… Well, he wasn't sure. He wasn't paying much attention.

Things felt strangely tense tonight. Awkward, maybe. Or was it just him? It had to be, since his mind's been on how months had passed since they confessed at Amanda's graduation party, and how they decided to only remain friends until Robert felt ready to pursue a serious relationship despite their shared feelings. His friend deserved better than the man he used to be. The man he still is? He couldn't tell. Logically, he knew he had to be making some progress, but he couldn't see it.

Eventually, Robert glanced over at his companion, who's eyes were glued to the stars above them. He smiled a bit at the sight, then cleared his throat to grab his friend's attention. He didn't even know what he wanted to say. Maybe he should bring up his feelings, check if they were still returned.

    No, that was stupid.

“Anything on your mind?” he asked. God, why did he say that? Both of them knew Robert's dislike for small talk, so this only gave away his nerves to the one other person that could read him like a damn children's book.
