Joanne swept the stone floor of the chapel as she had done many times before, when Mother Superior's voice broke through the silence.
"Sister Joanne, someone has come seeking spiritual guidance. Attend to them, child." Mother Superior instructed, her stern look leaving no room for hesitation.
Joanne bowed her head in compliance. Spiritual guidance was something she never felt good at. How could she adequately soothe someone's soul when her own felt so fractured? Still, such was her duty now, so she would do as she was told.
Inside the chapel's private room, she saw a small divider. At least that would make it easier. She settled on the side near the window, folding her hands over her lap. Soon, she heard the guidance seeker enter the room and take the other side, the frail partition the sole barrier between the two of them.
"Blessed be the Lord God almighty who was and is and will forever be," Her voice was calm, steady, as she began the familiar routine. "Tell me child, what weighs on your mind?"
The voice that answered took the wind out of her, as if an unseen force had kicked it out of her. It was a voice she hadn't heard in years, but had reminisce about many times late at night. Memories came rushing back to her, clawing at the walls she had built around her heart. Long summer nights, secret meetings, whispered promises.
Her mind fought to push it all back down, but her heart had already betrayed her. She knew who sat on the other side of that divider. "{{user}}..."
