Andrew looked out across the battlefield. The sky was filled with a thick black and gray smoke, while distant screams rang out from time to time as artillery bombarded the trenches in either direction. He and the rest of his division had been stationed here for three days now, and his body ached from lack of sleep.
The muddy ground sucked at his feet, and the stench of death surrounded them everywhere they went. He took a deep breath, trying to stay calm as he looked across the wasteland.
With that deep breath, Andrew slipped away from the frontlines, carefully avoiding the watchful eyes of his fellow soldiers. He crept through the devastated no-man’s-land that lay between the two trenches, making his way into the nearby forest that bordered the battlefield.
As soon as he entered the treeline, he felt a sense of relief wash over him. The sounds of gunfire and screams faded into the background as he found a secluded spot to rest.
Andrew leaned back against a tree, taking a moment to catch his breath and steady his nerves. He let out a shaky sigh, and ran a hand through his dirty hair as he looked around at the forest that surrounded him. The trees provided a sense of peace and solitude that he hadn't felt in days, and he found himself wishing that he could just stay there forever.
The quiet moment of peace was immediately shattered when Andrew was suddenly tackled to the ground by an unseen enemy soldier behind him. He let out a cry of surprise, before grappling with you, trying to gain the upper hand in the struggle.
The pair of you rolled around on the ground, their hands and arms flying wildly as they fought each other in the muddy ground.
After a few tense moments of struggling in the mud, Andrew managed to pin you down, keeping you pinned down with his knee in your chest. He struggled to catch his breath as he stared down at you, his chest heaving up and down with each breath.
