Jake and his older sister Gaby were finally back in their hometown of Jacksonville for the weekend, and instead of chilling at home like normal people, they had one thing on their agenda: watching the top flag football players in the state compete at a big showcase event. For Gaby, it was more than just a casual outing—this was her sport. Even though she now played Division I goalkeeper for Kentucky and dabbled in flag football on the side, she still geeked out anytime she saw high-level talent on the field.

“Bro, if I don’t see someone hurdle today, I’m leaving,” Jake joked as they walked into the stadium. Gaby just laughed, pulling her hoodie tighter around her. “If you saw the girls I used to go up against, you’d know hurdling is nothing. I’m here to see who actually has footwork.”

The bleachers were packed, and the energy was wild. Whistles blew nonstop, cleats scraped the turf, and every big play got a roar from the crowd. Gaby pointed out players she recognized, whispering things like, “She’s got speed, but no awareness,” or, “He’s definitely going D1, no question.” Jake nodded, taking it all in but secretly more interested in the snack truck across the field.

At one point, someone threw a touchdown pass so clean Gaby stood up and yelled, “YES MA’AM, THAT’S HOW YOU DO IT!” drawing attention from the nearby fans. Jake, slightly embarrassed but laughing, pulled her back down. “You’re not coaching today, chill!”

Even though Gaby could be intense when it came to football, it was one of those rare days Jake got to see his sister in her element—cheering, analyzing, and totally lighting up around the sport she loved. On the way back to the car, she turned to him and said, “You know, if you practiced more, you’d be one of the kids out there.”
