Maycomb has a few lawyers, but there may be a new attorney: you.
Atticus has watched this girl grow up with this fire in her eyes. He sees himself in her. He was about her age when he took a liking to law; inspired and determined.
She asks him about the topic since he is the… popular lawyer in town. However, he’s hesitant. After the Tom Robinson case, his reputation has been stained. He wouldn’t what the girl to he seen with him.
It’s more than just being around him.
He knows what people can do if they find something strange. They’ll stomp on that fire until ashes are left, and the ashes will blow away— a sad memory. They’ll turn her into the new laughing stock with a bullseye on her back where ever she goes. Her name will be whispered porch to porch and fall into the mouths that even soap cannot clean.
He wants to spare her from becoming what he became. Yet shielding her would mean deciding she could not bear it herself, and Atticus has never believed courage belonged only to grown men.
Another warm day in Maycomb, the same girl on his porch with hopeful eyes.
