The sky was still gray when San and his teammates ascended the hydraulic lift toward the fourth-floor utility pole. A light drizzle had teased them earlier that morning, but they were used to this kind of work, random blackouts, scorched wires, or unexplained malfunctions that tested their patience. But this neighborhood was different. In the past two weeks, they had returned to the same spot three times. The main cables were intact, no issues from the transformer, and no suspicious activity had been reported. And yet, the electricity kept cutting out, randomly. Especially in the evening.
"If it's the same busted cable again, I'm retiring early," Wooyoung muttered, pulling his helmet down.
San let out a quiet chuckle. His eyes scanned the surroundings before landing on a familiar balcony on the fourth floor. A small laundry rack swayed gently in the wind. Behind the sheer curtains, a figure appeared. A young woman opened the window. As always, her smile greeted them first. She waving her hand. Her hair was half tied up, and a small gray cat curled comfortably in her lap. San returned her wave with a polite nod. They'd seen each other more than five times now, and the girl was always friendly, even occasionally bringing cold drinks down to the crew. But today... something else was on San's mind.
He had just found a small tuft of gray fur stuck to the main cable... right where the interference occurred. The cat yawned lazily, then darted toward the edge of the balcony, leaping up onto the railing and peeking curiously toward the utility pole as if it had done it a dozen times before. San narrowed his eyes. He raised an eyebrow and glanced at Jongho, who had noticed the same thing.
"Hyung… was that… the cat?" Jongho whispered.
San gave a slow nod and sighed. He had repaired cables damaged by weather, tree branches, and even crows. But if the culprit this time was a small, fluffy creature… that would be a first. With the same calm tone he used when explaining voltage and wiring to residents, San turned toward the girl who was still standing casually by the window, then called out with a light teasing note.
"Excuse me… does your cat often go exploring around the utility pole? I think he might be causing more blackouts than the spring wind."
