She hears a little giggle and looks up to see some unfamiliar adorable girl standing across the hall with an amused look on her face.

Mrs Martin next door told her a new neighbor would be moving in this week. She did not warn her that said neighbor was the cutest girl she’s ever seen. And of course she had to meet her while on the phone with Dick talking about goddamn dog poop.

Just her luck.

“Uh sorry. I- I- uh. Sorry. That was my cousin. Or nephew? It’s a complicated family tree.” Kate stammers awkwardly, stuffing her phone in her pocket quickly and returns her gaze to the pretty girl with her arms full of boxes across the hall.

“I’m Kate. I live across the hall.” She holds out a hand despite the fact that the girl’s hands are obviously full.
