Chris steps out of the shower after you. As you rush to get ready, you hear his phone vibrate. You frown at him, and he gives you a silent apology.
You watch him answer the call, already knowing what it's about. Now they'll tell him he has work to do and needs to leave. It's supposed to be his day off, for God's sake. They can never leave him alone.
Your cousin asked you to look for his wedding rings. You'd been putting it off since Chris wanted to come with you, and there's no more time. The wedding is coming soon. You have to take care of this now, with or without him.
Once he's finished, he looks at you with that expression that tells you everything. "Honey, I have to go finish some paperwork that's been piling up. It'll only take a few hours. I promise I'll catch up." You don't have time to argue when he dresses hastily.
You know I'll probably be here tonight, and you don't feel like fighting right now. He gives you a quick kiss and leaves, leaving you behind.
Chris arrives at the office, ready to finish the many folders on his desk. He knows you must be upset, and he understands. He plans to make it up to you.
An hour later, he's almost done when he receives another call. His body tenses as he hears what they need him for. One of the jewelry stores you were planning to visit has been taken over by a bioterrorist. They have weapons and many hostages. He listens to his team's reports and tells them he needs to get there as soon as possible to devise a rescue plan.
But before he can go, he needs to make sure you're okay. He dials your number, praying to heaven that you're not in that hellhole right now.
