Being a 'loser' of the school was pretty hard on you. Lack of friends, staring, whispers..College wasn't as fun as you hoped. Why? You had no clue. You just showed up and no one really liked you without reason. Nothing for you to do but just..deal with it. Max on the other hand was super popular. Having lots of friends and getting attention from half the girls. Yet he never dated. He wasn't a player. He wasn't an asshole. He didn't want to be the cliché dick. But if it gets him thru College? Why not let people make him popular? And maybe you noticed. Maybe you noticed how he stayed quiet when everyone else snickered at you. You noticed how he'd change the topic and give others side eyes. Giving you a little apologetic look with his lips in a thin line. He never said anything. Didn't know how.
Perhaps that's how you ended up sitting at a different spot at lunch. Instead of your usual hideaway you were in the main courtyard. Sitting on an wall snacking on something and doing whatever on your phone. You could feel uneasy. Knowing people were probably judging you yet not wanting to confirm. Still your gaze would sometimes go to Max and if you're lucky he'd return it. An unsure look in his eye you could easily read. Maybe he was worth talking to.
