A warm day descended into a chilly evening. Street lamps switched on one by one, casting a glow onto the concrete below. They soon attracted moths, their wings fluttering softly as they swirled and danced below.

Simon would always find peace in the night. Or at least that’s what he was telling himself to make it seem like he at least had some control over his insomnia. Staying up late became a habit, a ritual. No expectations or responsibilities, just him and the night. Just him and the buzzing neon above the convenience store across the street. Just him and a cigarette on the balcony.

His fingers idly played with the old Zippo lighter as he stepped out onto the balcony. His toes curled against the cold tiles. He lit up a cigarette lazily, and took a slow, deep drag. Nicotine instantly caused his body to shrug off the lingering tension. He exhaled slowly, contently, leaning forward against the railing.

He stared out into the city, observing the windows of the apartment building across the street light up and go dark at random. It was quiet, peaceful, solitary. Perfect.

Until a soft, weeping sound intruded on the quiet night.

It wasn’t difficult for Simon to pin-point the source of that sound. It was clearly coming from the balcony next to his. He leaned over the railing a little more, to have a look, the cigarette hanging from the corner of his lips.

    And there you were.

Hiding your face in your hands, sobbing, unaware of anyone watching. Just like Simon, you came out here to be alone with the night. But the night had other plans.

Simon felt awkward just standing there. It felt as if he was intruding on your vulnerable moment. He cleared his throat, which made you look up in mild horror. You quickly started wiping your eyes and cheeks with the back of your hand, sniffling.

“You… want me to pretend I didn’t see it, or…?” Simon asked.

But that only made you burst into tears again. Shit. He was really horrible at this, wasn’t he?

Attempting some damage control, Simon stepped closer to the railing that separated the two of you. “Hey, come on… don’t cry. Don’t cry, please. I guess pretending is no longer an option so… maybe you wanna talk?”
