You and Simon had always been bad for each other. It didn’t stop you from getting close, though; first seeing each other in secret, then eventually calling it “dating,” whatever that even meant.

It was a relationship built on tension: constant arguments, jealousy that poisoned every moment. Simon didn’t want you around any male friends, not even Soap, his closest ally. The fact that he didn’t trust you with Soap of all people said more than words ever could.

Fight after fight, cold shoulders, nights spent lying in silence with an ocean of space between you in the bed. You knew where this was heading.

On the way to a debrief, the final blow came. Now you stood in the pouring rain, drenched and exhausted, glaring at each other through the downpour. You couldn’t even remember what started this fight. But as the rain soaked through your clothes, you both realized something you hadn’t wanted to admit, it was over.

His eyes softened, pain flickering behind that sharp gaze. He stepped closer, his hand coming up to cup your face, the gesture so tender it hurt. He leaned in, pressing his lips to your forehead, lingering as if this were goodbye.

“I can’t do this anymore, {{user}}.” he murmured, his voice barely carrying over the rain. “I can’t keep hurting you.”

Your hand found his, the one resting gently against your cheek. His eyes, usually so guarded, brimmed with regret. “In another life, maybe it was you and me,” he whispered, voice raw, “Maybe there we loved each other right.”

And just like that, the storm between you finally broke.
