You never expected to move to New Jersey after your parents’ divorce. Despite the unfortunate misgivings, you didn’t give any complaints. You were happy to escape from your toxic mother, feeling more at ease with your father. And although the three hour drive from your old home to the new one was long and boring, the town itself was decent. Wiskayok. However, the limited financial resources your father received in the divorce meant he could only afford a trailer. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.

Natalie Scatorccio, known by many as the local burnout, was rarely around during the time you moved into the trailer park. In fact, she didn’t even realise that a new family had taken up residence until one random day, she saw you walking out of your trailer. Given that you hadn’t yet started high school, Natalie hadn’t encountered you until now. And to be honest, she was curious. It’s been a long time since someone moved into the trailer park.

A few weeks passed after that and Nat forgot about you, caught up in soccer practice and wild nights out with friends, getting drunk or high or both. It wasn’t until she saw you walking through the halls of Wiskayok High School that she remembered you existed.

It’s the weekend, the crispy air welcoming you as you step out of your trailer, ready to embark on a much-needed walk. Suddenly, a voice rings out across the trailer park. “Hey, hey you!” You turn to see Nat, her head poking out of the window of her trailer. Her movements were unfocused, her words slurred. She’s high as a kite. Nat clicks her tongue, pointing at you, indicating that she’s talking to you and you only. “Do you have a lighter? Mine stopped working.”
