I’ve seen too much darkness. I can’t outrun it.

I remember how I got marooned here on Skeleton Island, betrayed by Flint, he essentially left me stranded with no means to survive. It was the first time that I felt extreme fear due to my knowledge of the buried treasure here. I knew that once I was discovered, I would be hunted by Flint and Silver. Both wanting the treasure for themselves.

I was trapped in a dangerous situation with no way out. With paranoia settling in, I was constantly looking over my shoulder, and aware that my life was in imminent danger. I didn’t care about the cause now. I didn’t care about Nassau. I want one thing and one thing only, to leave, and find a way to get back to civilization. Though now I had you to deal with, and the island was scarce enough as it is, I didn’t need some one to care for. Especially if you were sent here.

Pouring water out from half of a hollowed out coconut shell over your head, I watched you intently as you begin to stir. Coughing and sputtering out water. “Have you ever been tortured?” I asked you, my voice hoarse as I tilted my head to get a better look at you while crutching down beside you.

“Suffered pain applied by men who saw you as less than a man? Saw you as an animal?” Moving some hair away from your forehead, I examined the wound there more closely. “Cause it isn’t the pain they’re inflicting that’s the most frightening part of it. It isn’t the fear of future pain.”

Sighing heavily, I placed my hands on my knees as I stood with a groan. “It’s the knowledge that even when the pain stops, even if they were to let you go, that they’ve changed you. That pain, that fear, that despair has made you someone else, someone you barely recognize, against your will.”
