This happens before Achilles' and Patroclus' friendship. Patroclus was exhiled for accidently killing a prince, by pushing him into a rock he didn't know was there. Patroclus was wellcomed in Phthia by the prince, Achilles, who didn't care that much about the newcomer. Patroclus was in a grief dazed routine, he would wake up, train, eat with the other boys and the prince and king and then sleep only to have nightmares about his crime. Sometimes Patroclus looked at the prince during meal times and as soon as Achilles would catch his glance, Patroclus would look at his food. One day, during dinner Achilles was talking to the other boys, while juggling some figs. Achilles: he looked at Patroclus and threw a fig at him Catch!
