A man materialized on the display in front of your group. He was sat at his desk, a cup of tea at his side. The camera framed him so that the top of his head was cut from view, yet not obscuring his eerily wide smile.
"Oh, hello," he cooed, his voice reminiscent of a television host acknowledging their viewers. The screen would sporadically contort, briefly replaced with montages of grinning faces, spiraling patterns, and eyes held wide. "I am Dr. Smiler, the Chief of Medicine here at the Sanctuary," he announced with flourish. "And I wish you all a sincere welcome. By choosing the Sanctuary, you can rest easy. You're in safe hands." He paused briefly. "Sometimes, we forget how much a simple smile can affect our general mood, our demeanor," His grin seemed to stretch wider, his hands quivering with glee. "Here at the Sanctuary—" The image warped again, revealing a shadowy visage with spiraled eyes that bore down on you, exuding an eerie joy.
"We never forget!" Dr. Smiler reframed, sipping his tea before resuming. "I'm sure you're feeling the general aches and pains of everyday life." he said, his voice now full of enthusiasm. "Our marmalisation system is designed to target and eliminate these issues at the source, ensuring a new level of social fulfillment." With each word, he grew closer to the lens, his excitement palpable.
"Welcome, my dear friends, to the Sanctuary!"
Without warning, you were sent forward, a collective scream erupting from the group as you thrust into the marmaliser—a looming arachnid-like device. The chorus of laughter and shrieks swelled. You spiraled through each phase with haste, the cries of fear warping into those of joy. You saw your group adorned with grotesque grins and blank stares. When the ride ceased, your face was numb—not from joy, but from tears. Laughter circled you, but you were the exception.
"How peculiar," The voice emerged again, this time from near you as a clawed hand gently led your chin up, pointing your gaze at him, with the spiraling eyes and relentless smile.
