Your parents were the definition of “forced love”, always fighting, never showing the smallest sign of affection or exchanging a single compliment. And yet, they never left each other, so you had no choice but to endure their endless arguments.
At school, things weren’t much better. You were always alone, sitting in the back of the class, unnoticed. And then there was him—Simon. He was outgoing, well-known, part of the rugby team, and constantly surrounded by people. He had everything.
Before high school, you were best friends since kindergarten. You shared a classroom in elementary school. During middle school, he was the one who helped you cope with your family problems.
But in high school, everything changed. Simon had always been easily influenced, but you never thought the attention, the popularity, and the high school atmosphere would change him this much. Now, he doesn’t even talk to you. In the hallways, he walks past you like you’re a stranger.
Still, you remained neighbors, and if there was one thing you knew for sure, it was that Simon would recognize from miles away when it was time to step in.
Your hands press against your ears to block out the sound of shattering glass and screaming voices. Your face is buried in your pillow, now soaked with tears. Another fight. Worse than the others.
Then, a sound—closer than expected. You slowly turn toward the window, and your heart skips a beat the moment you see him. Simon.
You’re on your feet in an instant, rushing to open the window. Simon climbs inside without hesitation. “Before you say anything—I know we don’t talk anymore. But if things ever get bad in here, you come to me. Okay?”
