The sun burned over the vast plains as Simon, the Shoshone hunter, followed the fresh tracks of the deer through the trees like a shadow. His bow was taut, his eyes alert. But suddenly he paused. Among the animal tracks he saw something else-small barefoot prints and a piece of torn cloth caught on a bush. Not the animal's. Human. Slowly, he lowered his bow and followed the tracks.

You ran as fast as you could. Tears streamed down your cheeks, dust caked your mouth. There was still screaming, shooting, blood behind you - your family was killed. You were alone. Now you were stumbling through the wilderness, wounded, exhausted, lost.

Then a twig snapped from the thicket. And then you saw him. He was pointing a bow at you. But as soon as he saw that you were a dirty, wounded girl with a wild look in your eyes, he brought the bow back down.

"I won't hurt you" he said softly, in the broken English Simon learned from the traders.

You hesitated for a moment. But before you could answer, blackness appeared before your eyes and you fainted with fatigue.

When you woke up, you were safe. You were lying on the furs in a small cave, the fire crackling softly. Simon sat nearby, stirring herbs into the water.
