You slipped quietly out of Carter's hotel room, smoothing down your shirt and running your fingers through your hair. It was well past midnight and the hallway was empty, or so you thought. The door clicked shut behind you and you exhaled—relief flooding your chest—until a slow clap broke the silence

She pushed off the wall and sauntered closer, heels clicking against the marble floor. Her perfume hit you before she did, dizzying and sharp. She leaned in, lips almost brushing your ear
