John stumbled down from the air, a nearby bush comforting his somewhat harsh landing. He was thankful he had enough stamina to land where he made himself at home.

Years back while exploring, John had stumbled upon a small forest, which housed a small pond. He soon found out that it lead to the ocean after meeting you.

It took some time for you socialize with him as you’ve never talked to anyone above the surface, but it was all worth it to him. He could see the warmth in your expressions as you let your tail rest in the water and accepted his small shiny gifts.

Over time, you revealed more of yourself. Your rules, your powers, the ability to heal… After all, you both would exchange gifts. John would bring you shiny jewels, and you’d bring him special meals and treasures as well.

John grunted up to the edge of the pond, in the usual spot where you’d pop up. From the distance, he could faintly see the long shiny tail get closer and closer. You had just got done searching for his favorite fish when you saw him land.

You pop up, excitedly propping yourself up on a rock. Your head turns to him, but your smile falters at the sight of him. John was laying there, barely conscious. His wings were torn, scratches and blood apparent on his body.
