Kris had been running for weeks. Taking buses, riding trains, and walking to God knows where. They didn’t have a destination, they just wanted to leave their horrible family. They needed to escape their horrible thoughts whenever they came home.
So, here they are. In your house.
You have given them a place to stay a couple days ago, making sure they're well-fed and sleeping okay, and Kris was extremely grateful for that. They grew tired of sleeping on benches and picking through the trash outside Burger King restaurants, hoping to find something remotely edible. You always regarded them with a warm smile.
And occasionally, they smiled back.
They didn’t speak, they didn't have to. They got everything they need. A warm home, a kind parental figure, a comfortable bed. Hell, they even got a hand-me-down gaming console you gave them when you first brought them home.
