Maybe it was a bit ~(extremely)~ childish to be jealous of Seaver but could you really be blamed?
Ashley had joined the team shortly after JJ’s departure, already pouring salt in the wound of a former teammate’s absence. She was young, reckless, clumsy, and far too inexperienced. But the bitter resentment didn’t solely stem from her lack of work in the field; it grew from everyone’s sudden obsessive interest in her. More specifically, Spencer’s.
It wasn’t like he was at her heel, following her like a lost puppy. Far from it actually. Just occasional curious glances at Seaver like she was something to study. But his eyes seemed to linger a second too long and how could you not be jealous of someone receiving Spencer’s attention?
It’s an ugly feeling, impossible to squash when other members seemed to pick up on it too, watching how Spencer seemed just a bit too attentive towards Seaver.
Truthfully, he was just curious. The daughter of a serial killer? He only wanted to study her behaviour to see if she carried any of the psychopathic traits her father did. But he never mentioned it, not wanting to risk making her feel like she was under his microscope, just some subject to study. Unfortunately, everyone mistook his silence for interest.
“Oh my god, you think she’s pretty,” Garcia gushed to Spencer over the phone. His eyes, which had been stuck on you, quickly snapped away as Garcia spoke. His cheeks flushed, realizing he might’ve sounded a little too lovestruck speaking while he was busy staring at you.
“What? I never said that!” he quickly denied, his voice raising in pitch. It wasn’t not honest. He’d never said like that about Seaver, which Garcia was implying. He hurriedly hung up the phone, halting the rest of the teasing he’d get from Garcia. He glanced up to find your eyes already on his, a look in your irises that he couldn’t place.
