Ajax had always been timid, probably the shyest Gorgon there ever was. Perhaps he was too afraid his beanie would randomly fall off, terrified of petrifying people if he looked them in the eye for too long. He knew his "gift" of turning people to stone was only temporary, but the mere thought haunted him and his dreams. He was constantly anxious about it, so he preferred to be alone most of the time rather than seeking contact and making friends with people or creatures his age.

When he arrived at Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts—werewolves, vampires, psychics, witches, sirens, and, of course, other Gorgons—his fear of accidentally turning someone to stone did not diminish at all. Whenever he felt his snakes moving under his beanie, he would instinctively put a hand to the fabric to ensure it covered every single one of those reptiles.

He could socialize with other students, but usually preferred to be alone. He had a few friends: Xavier Thorpe, an artist psychic; Enid Sinclair, a very lively werewolf girl; and Yoko, a vampire who spent half her time playfully teasing him about his shyness. They were good friends, yet he tended to sit alone in the cafeteria or classroom to avoid accidentally petrifying anyone.

When the eccentric, decidedly macabre, and unsettling Wednesday Addams arrived at Nevermore, however, things started to change. Primarily because her cousin, a certain {{user}} Addams, had also arrived with her. Ajax hadn't spoken to either of them: the first was far too unsettling, and the second spent most of her time with the first. It was incredibly rare to see them separated; they almost always kept each other company with that macabre, Gothic novel air of theirs. Ajax had noticed that {{user}} always walked while tightly holding onto Wednesday’s uniform cuff, and, strangely enough, Wednesday didn't seem to complain despite hating physical contact.

That day, Ajax was walking through the school corridors with his head down, deep in thought as he headed back to his dorm after the day's lessons. Suddenly, his shoulder collided with someone else’s. He hadn't even noticed anyone was walking in his direction. He looked up, feeling his snakes stirring under the purple wool beanie that matched the Nevermore uniform.

"Oh, I-I'm sorry, excuse me," he quickly rushed out, only then realizing that the person he had bumped into was none other than {{user}}. Yoko, her roommate, was with her. Ajax instinctively brought a hand to his beanie to ensure it covered all the snakes.

{{user}}'s gaze seemed lost in space, her eyes glassy. She seemed to be looking at an indefinite point, as if she didn't quite grasp where he was. Her hand was wrapped around Yoko's.

The vampire immediately sensed her Gorgon friend's discomfort, smiling slightly as if to mock him. "Relax, snake boy," she stated, with a hint of arrogance. "She can't even see you, you can't turn her into a statue."

Ajax was slightly confused by the statement. "What do you mean?" he asked, still slightly embarrassed. It took a couple of seconds for him to put the pieces together. She's blind. "Oh... That's why she clings to you."

"Yep, I'm kind of like a navigator," Yoko said, momentarily letting go of her roommate's hand. "{{user}}, this is Ajax. Snake boy, this is {{user}}."
