Five years have passed since Team Flare’s defeat, and the Kalos region has changed. Geosenge Town has been rebuilt after the ultimate weapon’s reawakening, though the memory remains. Lumiose City is undergoing redevelopment, introducing new advancements for the people and multiple Wild Zones for Pokémon. Since Lysandre fired the ultimate weapon and seemingly perished, surprising discoveries about Mega Evolution have appeared. For the first time in three thousand years, new Mega Evolutions and Mega Stones are being discovered all across the region that hadn't existed before.
Professor Augustine Sycamore, Kalos’s leading expert on Mega Evolution, has been busier than ever with the arrival of these new discoveries. His research confirmed his long-held theory that Mega Stones formed three thousand years ago when certain stones were irradiated by the energy of Kalos’s Legendary Pokémon during the ultimate weapon’s first firing. AZ, the ancient king who now lives quietly in Lumiose City after reuniting with his Floette, confirmed this theory and revealed that the weapon’s second firing created the new Mega Stones that were now being found. AZ also warned Augustine about Ange, a device he once built within Prism Tower that had begun to malfunction and would soon go out of control.
Six months ago, Pokémon across Lumiose City began strangely Mega Evolving on their own. These rogue Mega Evolutions were powerful, distressed, and aggressive. Alongside his trusted assistants Dexio and Sina, Augustine helped AZ’s Team MZ calm down several of them. The crisis continued to escalate until a newly recruited trainer joined Team MZ and, along with their allies, managed to calm the remaining rogues. They even accomplished the impossible—Mega Evolving the legendary Zygarde to stop Ange after it seized control of Prism Tower. It was around this time that he learned how Lysandre had not perished after all, though his former friend had changed and lost his memories. He could only hope that his former friend would use this second chance wisely but it was certainly a lot to take in.
Soon after, another threat appeared to threaten Lumiose City. The mythical Darkrai, empowered by Ange’s energy, plunged the city into a dimensional nightmare. Wormholes opened up across the city, leading to a warped hyperspace version of it where even more dangerous Mega Evolutions rampaged. Team MZ stepped in again, aided by Korrina, the Mega Evolution Successor and Gym Leader. With Korrina's help, Team MZ subdued the rogue Mega Evolved Pokémon, including a Mega Evolved Darkrai. During the crisis, Augustine worked with Corbeau of the Rust Syndicate and Vinnie of Qusartico Inc. to analyze Mega Evolution data and predict future wormhole locations. He even ventured into Hyperspace Lumiose himself, where his Garchomp defeated another Garchomp with a previously unseen Mega Evolution. After obtaining its Mega Stone, his partner achieved the form and he later contributed his own Key Stone's Mega Energy to the Mega Donut needed to reach Darkrai.
With Darkrai defeated, the wormholes stabilized and Lumiose City mostly returned to normal. Augustine resumed his research, though he continued helping Team MZ with any Mega Evolution information they needed. Recently, Ansha—the young daughter of his friend Diantha—visited the city hoping to catch Rayquaza as a gift for her mother. Though Rayquaza ultimately went to Team MZ’s care, Augustine knew Diantha would still be proud of her little girl. Though, he hadn't expected the young baker to befriend the mythical Hoopa.
Today, Augustine sat at his desk in his Lumiose City laboratory reviewing research notes from his assistants. Wearing reading glasses, he sipped a cup of coffee while his Garchomp lounged in the warm sunlight nearby. Just then, the elevator chimed, signaling a visitor’s arrival. Setting aside his papers and brushing a hand through his black hair—now streaked with silver—he looked toward the entrance. "Bonjour! Do come in!" Augustine called warmly, waiting with a curious smile as the visitor approached.
