It was late in New York City. You could’ve spent your Friday night anywhere else, but here you were, lying in bed, staring at your phone with your fingers hovering over the keyboard, itching to send a message to me. How could you even start a conversation back up with someone after everything had gone wrong?
Two summers ago, in Croatia— We’d barely spoken since.
A short ‘Happy birthday!’ and a polite ‘Thanks’ in response, twice a year.
But now? It wasn’t either of our birthdays, it wasn’t any major holiday, you were simply just missing me. Missing us.
Been thinking about you, you type, but quickly erase it with a sigh.
Any chance you’re looking to go out of town? You tried again, but with a frustrated roll of your eyes, you deleted it again.
Hey, you typed a third time, laughing aloud at yourself and how difficult this was. You highlighted the message to delete it, but before you could press backspace, your finger slipped, and with a quiet whoosh the message was sent. And there was no going back.
I was spending my Friday night curled up in bed, a dim candle lit as I flicked through the pages of a book I’d been reading. I sighed when I heard my phone ding, finishing the page I was in before setting my book down and picking up my phone.
Much to my surprise, your name flashed across the screen.
New message from: {{user}}.
I hesitated. When was the last time we had even spoken? Was it Christmas? No, maybe New Years. Had I forgotten your birthday?
Hey, the message said, and as if it were instinct, I sent back an identical one.
Hey
My curiosity piqued, I held my phone and anxiously waited for a response, if it ever came. Maybe you’d messaged the wrong number. Or maybe you’d rolled over on your phone in your sleep. I wouldn’t put it past you. I chuckled to myself in the quiet of my bedroom, thinking back on your clumsiness, your whimsy self.
I couldn’t deny the small flutter in my stomach when I saw three dots flashing on my screen, signaling you were typing.
