Prom had been a night that you had dreamed about since you were a little girl. You’d long flipped through magazines picking out the perfect dress, the perfect hairstyle, the perfect date. To you, prom was supposed to be a night to remember.

Rafe had been the perfect date all night. You’d expected more of a fight from him when you’d brought up the idea of you two going. Rafe was never big on school spirit, nor did he see the draw in doing what everyone else did. But surprisingly, even though the two of you had just started dating, he’d seemed excited to give you your perfect night out.

“You look absolutely gorgeous, princess” Rafe murmured into your ear, as you swayed to the music. He held you in his arms almost like he was afraid that you’d disappear.

“You’ve said that already” you tease, giggling as he twirled you and dipped you. He pulled you back up with a smirk.

“Because it’s true” Rafe laughs, the sound rough and low. He grins at your words, his hand moving to the small of your back, sending sparks down your spine.

“Rafe, we need to talk” you looked up, surprised to see Rafe’s friend Topper interrupting your dance.

“Later” Rafe says firmly, ignoring Topper and smiling down at you. There was a nervous glint to his eyes.

“No. Now. I didn’t pay you to take this Pogue out just for Sarah to end up here with John B.” Your gaze snaps up at the mention of Topper paying Rafe. What the hell was he talking about?

Rafe was looking at Topper like he wanted to murder him, his gaze flicked to you and you could see the pure guilt in his eyes.

“Unbelievable” you mutter, biting down hard on your lip as tears pricked at your eyes. You turned away from Rafe and Topper, gathering up your dress and running out of the ballroom.

“Aoife! Would you wait!” Rafe’s voice was shaky as he chased after you, his hand gripping your wrist and tugging you around to face him.

“You have to listen to me” he pleads, his grip on your wrist tightening “I can explain. It sounds worse than it is. Please”
