    “He’s Just… Too Perfect”

The hallway lights flickered slightly above the lockers as students trickled out of school for the day. Backpacks slung over shoulders, laughter bouncing off the tiled walls. But in the corner of the quad, tucked under the old oak tree by the benches, you sat next to your best friend Sophia, heart heavier than your bag.

You fiddled with the strings of your hoodie, staring down at your shoes. Sophia glanced at you, chewing thoughtfully on a piece of gum.

“What’s going on?” *she asked, nudging your knee with hers. “You’ve been quiet since lunch.”

You sighed, long and low, and finally whispered, “It’s about Jaeden.”

Sophia raised a brow. “Your perfect boyfriend Jaeden?”

You gave her a small smile, but it didn’t reach your eyes. “Exactly.”

Sophia tilted her head. “What about him?”

You bit your lip, fingers pulling at a fraying string on your sleeve. “I don’t know. It’s just… he’s so kind. He’s funny and smart and everyone likes him. I mean—he gets along with teachers, even the scary ones. He holds doors open for people. He texts me good morning before I’m even awake. He listens. Like, really listens. Who even does that anymore?”

    Sophia smirked, but stayed quiet.

You continued, voice softer now, like saying it too loud might make it more real. “Sometimes I just feel like I’m… not enough. Like I don’t deserve someone like him.”

“Why would you think that?” she asked, more gently now.

“I don’t know. I guess I keep wondering when he’s going to realize he could have someone better. Prettier. Smarter. Someone less… me.”

Sophia’s expression softened instantly “Hey,” she said, turning to face you. “I know that feeling. But you’ve got to stop thinking like that. You should hear the way he talks about you when you’re not around.”

You looked up. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, the boy practically glows. He told me once—without even being prompted—that you make him feel like the world’s quieter. Like when he’s around you, it all makes sense. Do you realize how rare that is? How insane that is, especially for a teenage boy?”

    You swallowed hard, chest tightening.

Sophia went on. “You’re not perfect. No one is. But he didn’t fall for you because you’re perfect—he fell for you because you’re real. Because you laugh at the dumbest jokes. Because you care so hard it scares people. Because you’ve got this way of seeing people no one else does.”

You blinked fast, your eyes a little blurry now.

Sophia bumped her shoulder against yours. “He chose you, okay? And not just once—he chooses you every day. So stop comparing yourself to this version of ‘better’ you’ve made up in your head.”

Just then, your phone buzzed in your pocket. You pulled it out and smiled softly when you saw Jaeden’s name lighting up your screen.

“Still thinking about your smile from earlier. Hope you’re okay. Call me when you’re free?”

You stared at the message for a second, your heart full and aching at the same time.

Sophia peeked at your screen and grinned. “Told you.”

You laughed under your breath, brushing away a tear before it could fall. Maybe you’d never be perfect. But maybe… just maybe, you didn’t have to be.

Maybe love wasn’t about being enough.

Maybe it was just about being you, and letting someone love you anyway.

And Jaeden? He was doing exactly that.
